Tell Me Tuesday

Tell Me Tuesday with Canadian Mama
Hosted by Canadian Mama

Last week, i tried to warm up thinking about Spirits (of the liquor kind!). With the Egg Nog season upon us, i wanted to know what you'd all be drinking?   Apparently, the nearly-done pregnant ladies that follow have been thinking about just this, lol! But the rest of you?? Hmm...

One person said they'd enjoy some hot cocoa or tea. And well me, what will i be drinking?

I am sure i'll have a glass of vino or even a rum n'nog...
but i sure hope to be slurping back some HOMEMADE RUMTOPF~!

My mother-in-law does not know this quite yet, but i hope to find her stash and hide myself away!  Tee-hee!  Hop on over to her blog, Steadfast Ahoy, to read all about the yummy-rummy goodness!

Tell Me Tuesday This Week:
I NEED cookie recipes!  Cookie recipes of all kinds!  Heck, just tell me what kind of cookies you love and that will help me make some decisions.  I will be hosting a cookie-exhange, so i'd like something super easy and Nut-free (we just cannot take chances these days).

A link will do...or if you have the time, simply share your recipe in the comments.  Please let me have your Grandma's shortbread recipe??

YUM!

Last week, i asked you about donating time or money and to whom?  WOW! I found out that my readers are pretty gosh darn generous peeps! That puts a big smile on my face. It isn't important how much you donate, it's that you DO! Give yourselves BIG HUGE pats on the back!

It was inspiring to see that so many of you donate locally, at home, where help is needed. There is definitely no shortage of reasons locally, to not have to look too much further. Examples: Firehall, Men's Missions, Teen Homes, Salvation Army. Interestingly, no one said 'food bank'. But perhaps that is just a given these days?? Some of you simply want a child to open a present on Christmas morning...or to donate to medical causes afflicting families far and wide. And a few of you, are out there financing business opportunity with Kiva.org, giving a "Hand Up and not a Hand Out."

Many, many ideas offered. Very inspiring!

SO, what do we do?

1.  Smile Train- The Smile Train helps teach developing countries how to perform and fix cleft lip and palate; a seemingly simple operation these days in many parts of the world.  Do you know that it only costs $250 dollars for a 45 minute, life changing operation for a child??  That's it!  Feel free to check out their site to learn more.

2.  World Vision- This organization allows you to help at home in your own country, or far away.  Your choice.  My kids love that they can pick a 'real' gift--something that is a little more tangible and definitely useful.  Last year, we donated a Pig and Two hens and a Rooster, to a family in need.  There are many things to choose from, including medical supplies/school lunches/fruit trees/water wells/shelters and more.

3.  FOOD BANK- Over the last few years, this has been more 'MommyO' driven than kid-driven.  But this year, Beebo is already asking WHEN we're going to do it.  The food bank is a staple in society--it is very needed and almost completely relies on volunteer time and donations.  Typically, the kids do a chore that earns them some money--then, i take them to the grocery store, where they pick and spend the money on non-perishable foods for the food bank.  Okay, maybe they want to buy more Kraft Dinner than anyone should ever eat...but they are learning.  We pack the food up into our wagon and the kids proudly walk their donation through the doors.  It is pretty cool to hear your child say, "Hey--we used our money to buy this!" and load it up on the counter and then leave it there.  The questions linger all week long, while they strive to learn 'why' they did that.  We have food--DaddyO works hard for it--but a child simply does not understand that not everyone has food.  It is a BIG concept.  I hope to continue this for many years to come, as well as volunteering our time there once the kids are older.

4.  NEW TO ME THIS YEAR-- I follow a great lady by the name of Unknown Mami.  For two years now, i have heard her talk about KIVA.  So, this year i will follow in her footsteps and lend out my $25 bucks to help a business!  It seems like such a small amount to help a business get started!

Remember, it does not take much time or money to dramatically make someone else's life better!  Do what you can and be an inspiration to those around you!

Tell Me Tuesday This Week:
Lordy lordy--i think my weather widget is broken because today it is actually -38C.  Apparently...it would rather lie to us all, than to truthfully say how Gosh darn cold it is!  (It's okay, i am in disbelief as well)  So, to get us all in a warmer spirit, let's talk about Spirits!
With the festive season upon us, are you slurping back the nog a la rum?  Will you indulge in a few too many glasses of vino, a special scotch neat...or do you have a homemade punch recipe that you are just dying to tell us all about?  Calories are for sissies---so bring it on!

Last week, i asked for help with some ideas of things the kids could make as gifts for Christmas!  Thanks!

~Decorated picture frames with their picture inside
~Dish cloths/towels, with fabric paint hands on them
~Baked goods in decorated tins or mugs
~Birdfeeders
~Mason jars filled with layered yummy recipes!
~Homemade bath salts
~Decorated plant pots

Tell Me Tuesday This Week:
Each year we try to donate what we can to a few different causes or charities.  I really feel this is an important thing to do, whether you choose to donate close to home or far away!  So- i would love to hear about what causes/charities YOU donate time or money to??  What are your reasons for helping out with those causes/charities?  And, perhaps you could even share a link to a cause/charity... just in case we are not aware of it and might like to do so ourselves!

I am very excited to see how you all give!

Sunday In My City- Say What?

Yep...
Good Grief. We've done it!

My side of the family has always been a fan of Christmas.
Like, Clark Griswold-style fan.

However, over the years i have been muted somewhat by the hubby.
(Who, for what it is worth, is getting more and more into Christmas each year!
Perhaps it is the work of those munchkins?)

This year, we will not be having a 'real' tree due to travel.
So, after purchasing a 'reusable' tree (which is soooo much GREENER!),
we were all just too excited to put the darn thing up.
(Plus, this marks the first Christmas where both kids
knowingly are anticipating the season!)

Xman got to pick one ornament to add to our tree this year...
Is anyone *shocked* by his choice??

Miss Beebo chose, Rapunzel.
We had just been to see a preview showing of Disney's Tangled.

We needed a new tree topper this year and while at the Disney store,
i fell in love with this!
(Beebo loves fairies,  but my side of the family also happens to be very into 'Disney'.
Okay, i give in, i give in!!)

Tinkerbell!

The finished product!

Unknown Mami

Be sure to visit our lovely host  Unknown Mami !

So on this Sunday, we're all dressed for Christmas!
A tad (HA!) early for sure.

Now i am wondering...will i even be able to live with it all until Christmas??

PSST~ We saw a preview showing of Disney's Tangled this weekend
and LOVED it!  It was fabulous for kids and adults alike!
Oh yeah, bring some Kleenex along!

Check out the trailer here!
In theatres, November 24, 2010.

Happy Sunday Everyone!

Lest We Forget

In Flanders Fields
by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Please take a moment to remember today.

Tell Me Tuesday

Tell Me Tuesday with Canadian Mama
Hosted by Canadian Mama

Last week, i asked how many of you are ready for Christmas with prezzies stored away? Or if you will be fighting the masses on Christmas Eve? Most of you seem to have more done than i, so big props to you! While you claim to be organized, the truth did surface- you shop as your budget allows or because you find 'cheap' deals other times in the year. To that i say, BIGGER props!  (January credit card debt blows- so avoid it at all costs!)

Tell Me Tuesday This Week:
I need ideas people! I like to get the kids involved with the gift-giving process, but since they do not really have an allowance, we generally strive to have them make something. What types of homemade gifts do you have your kiddos make for family members, preschool teachers etc?

I know that i have some very crafty followers, so let me have it!

Royal Canin Selective- Discovery Pack Giveaway Winner!

This was a fun giveaway!  I appreciate the little tales about your cats, eventhough not all of you were eligible to win.  I truly hope the winning cat has as much fun doing their taste test, as my own cats did.

I know i am a little late in getting this giveaway result out, but i was playing with the random.org website.  Two giveaways in, i need a better way (and fairer way) of finding a winner.  I really did not think there would be so many darn options or kinds of 'true random number generators', but there was.  I think i've got things sorted now.

Two cats qualified to win-

1. A Maine Coon named Cyrus. (Alberta)  C/o Bo.
2. Shiska. (British Columbia)  C/o Nerissa.

And the winner of a Royal Canin Discovery Pack
(plus coupon for a free large bag!)
using Random.org is-
Cyrus!

I'll be in touch soon!
Congratulations!

Wordful Wednesday

This was Beebo, only one year ago.
Eventhough things started out terrible, she LOVED skiing!

This is Xman, a few nights ago.
Trying on his skiis and boots for the first time!

I wonder what the season will hold for him?
(He walked around the house for quite awhile like this,
and was so excited!)

Tell Me Tuesday

Tell Me Tuesday with Canadian Mama
Hosted by Canadian Mama

YAY- it's time for Tell Me Tuesday again!

Alright.  So i know that it is like half way through Tuesday, but the lady that hosts this awesome meme did not have her post up!  (It's okay CanadianMama, i really thought you were having your baby today!  LOL Btw, be sure to visit her Tell Me Tuesday to wager a guess which day she might really have her baby on??)

Last weeks Tell Me Tuesday was super fun!  I loved hearing about all the different BEST EVER costumes!  I especially loved those costumes that Mom's worked so hard on. ;)  We had a few sexy offerings;  think, the girls from Robert Palmers video "Simply Irresistable" and a Hooters girl.  Some group dressing up;  A quartet of Wizard of Oz characters and a Fallopian Tube Swim Team.  A racecar driver (Mario Andretti) and a Parrot to round out the list.  Unfortunately, i was a pretty sad dresser-upper as a child and more often than not, went as a 'Punk Rocker'.

One commenter however, had me in stitches laughing!!....And if you follow her blog, you'll know that she does indeed leave good comment.

Thanks for playing along!

Tell Me Tuesday This Week:
Now, with Hallowe'en out of the way for the year we are in the homestretch to Christmas!  EEK!  If you have not started your Christmas shopping yet, times a wastin' and days are running out!  So- i want to know, how organized are you??  Have you been stockpiling Christmas gifts since June, or will you be running around last minute on Christmas Eve trying to finish up??

(For some awesome gift ideas and giveaways, pop in to ThisBird'sDay,
for her annual event- 12 Days of Christmas!)

A Taste Test

My kitty cats Riley & Zoey, were lucky recipients of the NEW Royal Canin Selective dry cat food.  Royal Canin has discovered that cats by nature choose their food based on things other than taste.  While humans use taste as one of their stronger senses, for a cat this is not the case.  Cats rely on smell, how it feels in their mouth, and how it makes them feel after they've eaten it.  With three fabulous selections to choose from, Riley & Zoey were off to discover!

~SelectiveTM 31 Aromatic Attraction (maroon dish)
Although cats are carnivores, they first select their food based on aroma. It is designed for the cat that uses smell to primarily choose their food.

~SelectiveTM 34/29 Savor Sensation (pink dish)
Cats are then influenced by the size of the kibble, its shape and texture, as well as its taste. Taste plays an important role even though it is the cats least developed sense.  Two kibble shapes are available.

~SelectiveTM 40 Protein Preference (yellow dish)
The sensation a cat feels after having eaten their food, will be a strong contributing factor to their preference.  A more positive feeling will encourage repeat visits.  With protein, carbs and fats in ratio, this food was designed for the cat that chooses his food based on how it makes him feel after.

We were sent the Discovery Pack- complete with three samples of the above formulas (and 3 super cute little dishes!).  Riley & Zoey could hardly wait to get started!

Riley started the taste test~
heading straight for the yellow dish!

Bypassing the pink dish after the yellow dish was done.

Hmm... maybe she is not the most *fussy/selective* of cats...

She ate everything!

Okay, so that was just Day 1.  Riley was clearly starved or something, as she put away all the different flavours- no problem.  Day 2 and Day 3 were not such 'pig out' fests, and Riley proved to really like the yellow dish- Protein Preference.

Then, it was Zoey's turn...

Amazing!  She was that far away from all the dishes, yet went for the maroon dish, containing the Aromatic Attraction.  I guess she's the type that is attracted first by the smell of her food.

Zoey was not nearly as gluttonous as Riley.  She finished all of the Aromatic Attraction (maroon) and most of the Savor Sensation (pink), leaving the Protein Preference (yellow) tasted but not eaten.  Days 2 and 3 of the taste test would prove that Zoey really did like the Aromatic Attraction formula best- but would certainly not scoff at the chance to eat the Savor Sensation

I really enjoyed having my cats try out this new food from Royal Canin.  Unless i specifically head to a 'pet food' store, i am unlikely to find a food that contains *meat* as its first ingredient.  Why waste money on unnecessary fillers!  The kids also, enjoyed the experience.

GIVEAWAY:
Do you have a kitty cat (or know someone with a kitty cat) that would like to do a taste test of its own??
Simply leave me a comment on this post, telling me a little something about your cat by Saturday, November 6th, 2010  (Canadian residents ONLY).

The lucky cat will receive one Discovery Pack by Royal Canin, plus a coupon for a FREE Large bag of the food chosen by your cat.

Show your kitty some love--or even pass it along to a well deserved cat for Christmas!

*Peek Thru Our Window was provided with 2- Discovery Packs for Riley & Zoey to try out.  We were also given a coupon for a free Large bag of Royal Canin Selective, on behalf of Fleischman-Hillard*
