Are you in the dark about Optical Brighteners? #Giveaway

Remember black lighting?

And the oohs and ahhs of your whites lighting up?

Well, it turns out that optical brighteners, while fun in black light... really aren't good for us or our environment. Optical brighteners are common chemicals in laundry detergents that are deposited on to your clothes during the wash cycle.  They create the illusion of cleaner, brighter, whiter clothes.

But optical brighteners are not biodegradable.  They are also toxic to some marine life. And when mixed with sunlight, can produce a skin rash on individuals with sensitive skin.

To learn more about optical brighteners, watch this short video -

The Test:

Using two identical organic cotton shirts, wash one in conventional laundry detergent that contains optical brighteners and the other in Seventh Generation laundry detergent (that does not contain optical brighteners).

Free from dyes, synthetic fragrances & optical brighteners!
A plant derived cleaning agent with triple enzymes that lifts dirt & grease.

As you can see, the photo on the left shows two identical t-shirts.  The t-shirt on the left, was washed with a laundry detergent containing optical brighteners, while the t-shirt on the right was not.  Picture two shows you how the t-shirt on the left glows in black light.

Seeing is believing!
